The Catholic Children's Society is a child welfare agency covering the Diocese of Plymouth. We provide: * Individual grants and bursaries for families and children in need and * Parenting courses in school and community settings.

Prisoners' Sunday has passed now but It is a day when the Catholic Church encourages everyone to reflect on and pray for prisoners and their families. Prisoners’ Sunday is a time to think about how we as individuals, as a Church and as communities are serving those affected by imprisonment.

Our parish has a weekly collection for the children of Colombia after Mass. Click on the picture to see their wonderful work.
A lot of love is invested in this parish activity: assembling the right mix of gifts, obtaining the empty shoe boxes, sorting items appropriate for the age and sex of each recipient and the wrapping and labelling of each box.

Blessings on all the kind parishioners who donated such thoughtful, generous gifts, collected & packed. 47 lovely boxes will be delivered soon to bring some Christmas cheer to 47 men, women & children in the poorer areas of Eastern Europe. PLEASE REMEMBER TO COLLECT SHOE BOXES FOR 2024!!

World Mission Sunday, 23rd October, 2022
This is marked in every Catholic parish throughout the world. Through prayer and gifts, it supports missionaries who work alongside communities which are poor or in need, regardless of their background or belief. Donations go to Missio, which is the Pope’s charity for world mission to build much-needed infrastructure, from chapels and schools to orphanages, clinics and dispensaries. Requested by the local community, the support from Missio transforms lives and creates a hub from which the young Church can flourish and grow.
Please pray for the mission of the Church throughout the world and give what you can to this very important collection which helps to sustain the future of our Church. There will be a Second Collection at each of the Sunday Masses. Please gift aid if you can, using one of the Missio envelopes provided. The Passage -
A homeless charity is founded on the teachings of St Vincent de Paul. The Passage’s work,often finding that our caring, hands-on approach to supporting those in greatest need rings true with their beliefs.
The pandemic fundamentally changed how The Passage helps those who are homeless. They continued to run frontline services and adapted quickly to move hundreds of people into temporary hotel accommodation. This gave the charity a unique opportunity to address their clients’ needs and help them find safe routes off the streets.
However, there is now a new group of people at immediate risk of becoming street homeless due to the economic crisis. The Passage is committed to preventing people from sleeping out; even one night can have a devastating effect and make recovery and resettlement much more difficult.
The Passage offers a wide range of services, all year round, to meet the needs of homeless and vulnerable people. Our aim is to help people to address the issues that have contributed to them becoming homeless, and to enable them to move on to live safe, happy and fulfilling lives. From 30 November for 1 week the government will double all donations to The Passage.

GROUPS
The St Vincent de Paul Society (or as it is often known - the SVP) is an international Christian voluntary organisation dedicated to tackling poverty and disadvantage by providing practical assistance to those in need – irrespective of ideology, faith, ethnicity, age or gender.
The Society is a lay organisation initially formed in Paris in 1833 by Blessed Frédéric Ozanam and his companions, and active in England & Wales since 1844. Placed under the Patronage of St Vincent de Paul, it is inspired by his thinking and works. It seeks, in the spirit of justice and charity, to help those who are suffering poverty in whatever form.
The local work of the SVP includes visiting the housebound, those in the prison, fund food and other assistance to the homeless, and organising the food collections of the Gillingham Food Bank.

A Contemplative Community
The Comunità dei Figli di Dio (CFD, Community of the Sons and Daughters of God) is a religious order, monastic in character, and includes monks, religious and lay people, but its members live in the wider community. The comunità is committed to a contemplative life, with particular devotion to the reverent celebration of the Mass, fidelity to the teachings of the Church, prayer (including the Divine Office), and study of the Bible and the Early Fathers of the Church. Unlike other monastic communities, its members are mainly lay people but includes priests as well. The comunità commit themselves to attending weekly prayer meetings, monthly one-day retreats, and an annual week of spiritual exercises.

MISSIO is the Pope's official charity for overseas mission. We share the hope of the Gospel where there is turmoil, poverty and uncertainty in the world, and where the Church is new, young or poor. Missio empowers local people to form and sustain communities of faith and trains future leaders so that the vital work of the Church in the world can take place.

Let The Children Live! is a charity that works in Colombia with children from the streets and shanty-towns of the city of Medellín. These children were once called ‘the disposable ones’ and they are at high social risk from the violence that they experience in the streets.
Most of the danger in the shanty-towns comes from the many gangs that control them. Let The Children Live! is at present working with 500 very vulnerable boys and girls in this city. For most of them it is their last hope. Their ages range from six-year-olds to teenagers and they are often unloved and unwanted; even beaten, robbed, raped and sometimes murdered. By the rest of the world they are either unknown or forgotten.
LTCL! aims to safeguard the lives of these children from the poverty and violence of the streets, and to make their lives worth living by giving them love, education and a future.
To date, as a parish we have contributed over £118,000 to Let The Children Live! Our parish contact is Anna Richards (contact details to follow).
AOS provides practical and pastoral care to all seafarers, regardless of nationality, belief or race. Our port chaplains and volunteer ship visitors welcome seafarers, offer welfare services and advice, practical help, care and friendship. The Apostleship of the Sea in Great Britain is part of an international network known to the maritime world as Stella Maris. working in more than 250 ports around the world. Pope Francis is it’s patron.
90% of world trade is transported by ship. However the life of a modern seafarer can be dangerous and lonely. They may spend up to a year at a time away from home, separated from their family and loved ones and often working in harsh conditions.
Both ashore and afloat the emphasis is on the welfare of the crew who work long and demanding hours, and go for months at a time without the sacraments.

DORCAS SEWING GROUP
Dorcas is an example of a woman who lived what she believed. She didn’t just talk about helping those in need; she made it a part of her life, and because of that she was deeply loved by those around her. She used her God-given talent of sewing to do God’s will. Read about her in Acts 9 : 36 - 42
